Can you believe summer break is almost over? With just a couple of weeks left before school starts in the Greater Houston area, it’s the perfect time to sneak in a few more memory-making moments with your kids! Let’s make the most of these last free days of summer without the stress of planning anything big.
If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids moving, get out of the house (or stay in with purpose), and enjoy this time together, here’s your go-to bucket list! All of these ideas are fun, active, and great for preschool and elementary-aged kids!
🧘♀️ Backyard or Park Yoga
Spread out some towels or yoga mats and try a few simple poses under the trees. Let the kids get silly and make up their own! It’s more about movement than perfection. Plus, it’s a great way to slow down and reset together.
🏃♂️ DIY Indoor Obstacle Course
Too hot outside? No problem! Grab couch cushions, painter’s tape, hula hoops, or pool noodles and turn your living room into a mini adventure. Time each other, crawl under chairs, and balance on books. Let the kids help set it up! It’s a blast!
💦 Sprinkler Hopscotch
Chalk a course on the driveway or sidewalk, turn on the sprinkler, and hop through it! Such an easy setup but so much fun. Your kids will love it!
🚲 Neighborhood Bike Parade
Add streamers or signs to your bikes and take a few laps around the block. Make it a family ride or invite a friend! It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the fresh air.
🎶 Dance Party at Home
Pick a theme (80s, beach party, superhero), dress up, throw on a playlist, and let the kids DJ! Living room dance parties are always a hit. Who doesn’t love a good dance-off?
🐻 Move Like an Animal Game
Call out different animals and let your kids show you how they move! Think crab walks, bear crawls, frog jumps, and flamingo stands. It’s a fun way to get everyone moving and laughing!
🏀 Sign Up for a Local Sports Clinic
Many local places offer short summer clinics or trial classes this time of year. This is perfect for letting kids try soccer, tumbling, dance, or martial arts before school starts. Look for drop-ins or one-day events at local rec centers, gyms, or private studios!
🌳 Visit a Local Movement Hotspot
Here are a few of our local favorites:
Mercer Botanic Gardens – Great for walks and a little quiet time.
Pundt Park – Big open space, trails, the creek, and playground = easy free fun.
TGR Exotics Wildlife Park – Move while exploring and learning about animals!
Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Splashtown – Water play + non-stop movement!
Indoor Fun – Check out Urban Air or Altitude Trampoline Park for some air-conditioned jumping and dodgeball!
Keep It Simple and Fun!
There’s no need to overplan! Just pick one or two things each day to enjoy moving together. Whether you're in the backyard, at a park, or bouncing through a trampoline center, every little bit of movement helps you and your kids stay active, happy, and ready for the school year!
